Each newsletter, we will feature one of our producers, giving you a behind the scenes look at their business and letting you get to know the people behind the produce. This month, it’s The Hampshire Shepherd.
The Hampshire Shepherd, otherwise known as Iain, Katie, Joshua & William McFarlane are a first generation farming family based on the Surrey/Hampshire border. With more than 30 years of experience breeding quality livestock, their traditional grass fed lamb really is an experience to behold.
Back in the early days, Iain operated more of a traditional farming model, producing not only sheep, but also cows, pigs, chickens and Christmas turkeys. Alongside this, he also ran a busy agricultural contracting and contract shepherding side of the business.
In those days, direct sales weren’t even something that was considered, everything was sold through traditional livestock markets.
Fast forward to today, and things have moved on. The Hampshire Shepherd is now very much a family affair concentrating on producing quality grass fed lamb.
In the last couple of years, The Hampshire Shepherd has established a significant presence in the Farmers Market and Food Festival circuit, which is very much Katie’s side of the business. 2023 has seen the launch of the catering side of the business, and you may see The Lamb Van at a local event. Or even be lucky enough to book them for your wedding.
Iain, Joshua & William are responsible for the day-to-day running of the flock, endeavouring to maintain the highest of welfare standards. The ultimate aim is to build a sustainable business to give Joshua and William a future in the farming industry.
