Chairmans Note

What a great way to welcome November with more awards for one of our producers.  Please join me to celebrating the success of Butler Country Estates with their Gold at The Great British Food Awards 2025 for their classic smoked trout pate, fantastic – see more below!

Whilst on the subject of congratulations, please join us in wishing Grace and Tom from Frensham Market Garden all the best as they got married last month too.

There is definitely a shift in the seasons, especially now the clocks have changed. The animals on the farm are certainly gearing up for colder weather.  We are half way through tupping time with the sheep, next week another forty or so ewes will meet the rams, leaving just our May lambers who have their turn in December.

The goats have started kidding, including an eventful cesarean, which was successful and mum and kid are doing well. We also rehomed some alpacas in need, there certainly are different to what we are used to but fun never the less.

Enjoy the markets, there are some great cold weather warmers to be had and gifts for Christmas shopping.

Happy shopping,
Luke

New Producer: Drybay Smallholdings

Joining us at Milford for the first time are Drybay Smallholdings, with their range of goats milk soap along with wool from their rarebreed sheep. In their words:

We live on a smallholding near Billingshurst in West Sussex with (among other animals) our herd of goats and sheep.

The goat’s milk is an amazing, natural resource. We started making soap when the goats produced more than we could use at home. Our soap is made using only four necessary ingredients to keep it as pure and simple as it can be. We do NOT use palm oil.  We use essential oils and pure botanicals to further enhance the soap

Our flock of sheep include several Leicester Longwool sheep (a rare breed) which are renowned for their high lustre fleece. They are sheared by us at home, and the fleece is professionally worsted spun in Cornwall. This process aligns the fibres making it extra soft against the skin. We offer the spun skeins of wool, carded fibre and some small handmade products.

From time to time, we may have other products to offer from our smallholding – willow wreath bases to make your own seasonal wreath, dried flowers or quail eggs.

 GOLD for Butler Country Estates

Many congratulations to Richard and his team at Butler Country Estates for winning Gold at the Great British Food Awards 2025 for their Classic Smoked Trout Pate

Judged by none other than Jack Stein, acclaimed chef and son of culinary legend Rick Stein, who said:

“This was amazing, loved the taste and texture and the colour. Well seasoned, ate the lot!”

You can pick you the award-wining pate at both Haslemere and Milford markets this month.
